Senior Perl Web Developer
Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute
Salary range £27,589 to £38,067 per annum dependent on experience
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, based south of Cambridge, is one of the world’s leading genomic research centres funded primarily by the Wellcome Trust. Our mission is to use genome sequences to advance understanding of the biology of humans and pathogens in order to improve human health.
We have an exciting position available for an experienced PERL web developer to work as part of the Sanger Institute Core Web Team on the Decipher project (decipher.sanger.ac.uk). Decipher – DatabasE of Chromosomal Imbalance and Phenotype in Humans using Ensembl Resources is an international collaboration between Clinical and Medical Genetics laboratories worldwide. Its aims are to collect and correlate pathogenic submicroscopic chromosomal imbalances; namely chromosomal microdeletions/duplications/insertions, translocations and inversions and display this information on the human genome map with the aims of:
- Increasing medical and scientific knowledge about chromosomal microdeletions/duplications
- Improving medical care and genetic advice for individuals/families with submicroscopic chromosomal imbalance
- Facilitating research into the study of genes which affect human development and health
The project has entered an exciting expansion phase with the launch of the associated Deciphering Developmental Disorders (DDD) project (www.ddduk.org). To help accommodate this change the Decipher database and website is now extended with the inclusion of a LIMS and a greatly increased patient portfolio, in addition to the implementation of off-campus website business continuity service provision.
The project website (decipher.sanger.ac.uk) which is hosted by the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is written in a combination of HTML/CSS/Javascript and PERL served over SSL with a MySQL database hosting the data. Allied to this are a number of sister sites including www.ddduk.org, www.genomethics.org and a forum website.
Essential Skills
To facilitate this expansion we are seeking to employ a senior PERL web developer. The successful candidate will work as part of the Sanger web team from where bioinformatics support will be made available. As a minimum applicants will be expected to have experience and/or qualifications in the following:
- Computer Science degree or extensive relevant experience
- PERL programming language in a Unix environment
- HTML, CSS, Javascript, AJAX, JSON, jQuery
- SQL especially MySQL
- Apache/mod_perl webserver
Benefits
The Institute has excellent purpose built facilities on the Genome Campus, Hinxton on the outskirts of Cambridge. We offer a comprehensive range of benefits including a final salary pension scheme and excellent on-site facilities. Further details can be found on our website https://jobs.sanger.ac.uk.
Closing date: 26 February 2012.
