Job description
Are you a Full Stack Developer looking for an exciting opportunity?

We are looking for experience and motivation. You will join the Literature Services team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located at the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The Literature Services Team leads the development and maintenance of Europe PMC, a large repository of over 33 million full text biomedical research articles and abstracts. These records are supplemented with links to biological databases, citation networks, and semantic annotation. Europe PMC is funded by 28 funders of biological and biomedical research across Europe, led by the Wellcome Trust.

At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 24 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.

Qualifications and experience
Do you have significant experience in software engineering with Java and related technologies? Are you able to lead projects independently? Have you processed large datasets in a production environment?

We are looking for:

– A Full Stack developer who has strong experience of at least 5 years in leading and delivering projects both independently and as part of a team.
– Extensive knowledge of the following technologies will be expected: Spring, Hibernate, Lucene/Solr, Oracle, MongoDB, SOAP/RESTful Web Services, application performance tuning and problem diagnosis.
– Experience in the following will be desirable: Javascript (jQuery, Angular, ReactJS), CSS, Ruby on Rails, PL/SQL, Unix/Linux command line skills, shell scripting and common command-line tools, Git, issue tracking software (JIRA). You will need to be familiar with best practices in software design and Agile processes (experience as a Scrum Master), experience of testing code/following good coding standards and managing deployments to the live environment. ‘Traditional’ compute-farm processing (LSF) or next-generation processing frameworks (Hadoop) will be an advantage.
– Experience in the fields of Biomedicine and/or Scientific Publishing will also be an asset.

Good communication is crucial to the success of our projects, so you need to be able to maintain good working relationships and build new ones. The ability to work independently, efficiently and within defined deadlines, close collaboration with team members, other teams and stakeholders, and being in general a good team player is expected. What we are really looking for is commitment to delivering high-quality public services for the advancement of science.

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation.

We have an informal culture, international working environment and excellent professional development opportunities but one of the really amazing things about us is the concentration of technical and scientific expertise – something you probably won’t find anywhere else.

If you’ve ever visited the campus you’ll have experienced first-hand our friendly, collegial and supportive atmosphere, set in the beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside. Our staff also enjoy excellent sports facilities including a gym, a free shuttle bus, an on-site nursery, cafés and restaurant and a library.
