University of Nottingham

The MSc is taken over one year, full-time, and is taught jointly by the School of Chemistry and the Business School. It comprises taught modules, dissertations, presentations and experiential learning components.

The transformation of novel science into successful business ventures is key to the long-term profitability of the world’s chemical and related industries, including pharmaceuticals and petrochemicals. This goal requires scientists who possess a critical combination of technical and business skills. Increasingly, such individuals are playing a pivotal role in today’s knowledge-driven economy by enhancing existing businesses and by setting up new ventures themselves.

This unique MSc course provides an exciting opportunity for science graduates from the UK and overseas to learn about the latest developments in chemical science, to experience first-hand commercialisation pathways for new discoveries and gain the required business skills and training for a successful career at the science-business interface.

The course attracts students from around the world meaning you will not only experience a purely academic training but will also be exposed to new ideas, approaches, and methods of working from other countries adding an extra dimension to your learning experience. To ensure you have the best possible experience, we limit the course to 20 students each year.
The course is based on a central core of modules that develop important business-related skills, media training and familiarise you with pathways to commercialisation of scientific breakthroughs. Guest speakers from industry, academia, government and investor funds give seminars as part of some of these modules, offering you a direct view of current thinking and future expectations. Visits to local companies and SMEs (small and medium–sized enterprises) are also arranged.

This core programme is further supplemented by a free choice of modules covering novel developments in the chemical sciences, exposure to chemical engineering design, project management and case studies of sustainable energy development and successful industrial commercialisation projects. You can choose the modules that best suit your interests, skill requirements and future career plans.

The MSc culminates in an exciting chemistry technology transfer project with the possibility to experience the daily workings of a university spin-out company or take part in a real industrial commercialisation project as part of a larger team. This project will involve individual and group work.

Home and EU students can find information at www.nottingham.ac.uk/graduateschool

Information for international students can be found at www.nottingham.ac.uk/internationaloffice

The Northern Centre for the History of Medicine at Newcastle University is pleased to advertise a Masters Studentship Award for postgraduate study in Newcastle University’s MA programme in the History of Medicine during the academic year 2012-13. The closing date for applications is 30 May 2012.

The studentship will be awarded at £6,500 for a full-time student of outstanding merit, including £5,500 towards fees (covering home/EU rates) and awarding £1,000 maintenance support. A part time studentship would be considered for a meritorious applicant at c. half the above rate per annum. The studentship will be available as of September 2012.

Successful applicants will join the postgraduate community based at the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Newcastle University. Postgraduate teaching and research supervision in the History of Medicine at Newcastle is delivered by scholars with established international reputations in the field.

Subject to slight changes, the MA in the History of Medicine incorporates three compulsory formal research training components (60 credits), during which students develop research skills and methodologies; three special study options (60 credits), one of which can be a foreign language course or a module in one of the other MA programmes offered by the School; and it culminates in the completion of an intensively researched 14,000 word dissertation (60 credits). Study consists mainly of seminars, lectures, tutorials, workshops and independent learning.

The programme provides the necessary research training that will either link into further PhD and postgraduate academic study, or act as a stand alone MA. Candidates who have successfully completed the programme will be eligible to take part in the annual Wellcome Trust PhD studentship competition. The MA also provides the key skills and training for a wide range of careers both within and outside of Higher Education.

Eligibility
Applications for the studentship are invited from highly motivated graduates from various backgrounds including the Humanities and Social Sciences. Applicants require a good (or predicted) undergraduate degree result (1st or high 2:1) in such a subject. Candidates with a medical background are also strongly encouraged to apply, and the studentship is open to current stage 4 Newcastle medical students who have opted to take the MA in the History of Medicine as an intercalated degree after stage 4 MBBS. Applications from overseas candidates with equivalent qualifications are also very welcome.

The ability to visualise an object or specimen of interest has always been a fundamental aspect of biological and biomedical research. In recent years, imaging techniques and approaches have been revolutionised through advances in computing, instrumentation and automation, novel fluorescent tools, and the ability to resolve and accurately quantify ever smaller structures. Advancing on the limitations of the naked eye, the microscope is one of the groundbreaking inventions to emerge during the Scientific Revolution. It continues to assist in breaking new ground and is an essential tool for anyone working in the life sciences.

This cutting-edge applied course provides an in-depth theoretical and practical insight into biological imaging and its wide application across the life sciences. Microscopy and biological imaging are essential tools in understanding the molecular basis of disease and through to the development of treatments.

With a strong practical focus students have unparalleled hands-on access to state-of-the-art equipment from the first week. Applicants do not require previous experience of microscopy as the taught component of the course is through small groups by world-leading academics. Emphasis is placed on the preparation of samples for microscopy, the practical use of imaging equipment, and image analysis. All the key disciplines of biological imaging, including confocal microscopy, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, light sheet microscopy, automated screening microscopy, flow cytometry, spectroscopy and image analysis are studied.

This one year course consists of a number of taught modules which run from September through to April and an extended laboratory-based project which is submitted in late August. Students have full involvement in active and vibrant research groups and gain valuable insight into the use of microscopy and imaging in a highly focussed research environment.

Career opportunities
Graduates of this course will have the important ‘know-how’ with respect to sample preparation for microscopy, use of a wide variety of imaging equipment and expertise in image analysis. All of these skills are essential to the future of both our academic and industrial communities.

This MSc will also be of great value to individuals wishing to pursue scientific careers in health-related, bio-pharma such as diagnostics and drug discovery, or academic environments. It is designed to open up more possibilities for careers rather than narrow someone’s specialist interests.

Entry requirements
This programme is suitable for all Science graduates with an Honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in the life sciences such as Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Biomedical Science, Medicine, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics.

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate competency in English language (at least 6.5 in IELTS or a TOEFL score of 100 on the Internet Based Test).

Queen’s University Belfast, Centre for Plasma Physics

The Master of Science course in Plasma Physics will admit its next intake in September 2012.

This is a largely web-based Master of Science course in Plasma Physics. It is designed to provide students with a knowledge and understanding of the principal facts, theories and experimental and computer simulation techniques of plasma physics through research-led teaching. While the QUB-enrolled students will be required to be in full-time study at QUB, the web-based teaching format is designed to allow the course and modules to be studied and delivered by students and staff at other locations in the UK and abroad. At QUB the web-based taught modules will be completed by face to face tutorials and short projects undertaken in the QUB research laboratories and a 15 week research project which can be undertaken at QUB or in a suitable research institution or industry.

Innovative delivery & assessment methods
The delivery methods employ well recognised pedagogical strategies to keep students engaged with the course material. New material is made available each week.

Textual Material
The student will be directed to download and read, in detail, textual material from the course website, ensuring they understand it by creating their own abbreviated notes and supplementing the notes provided from other sources.

Online Tasks
The student will also be directed to work on two or three online tasks which will be embedded in the text which they discuss with their fellow students in the online discussion forum.

Assignments
There are two assignments in each module, either in the form of an essay-style work addressing a specific topic and requiring the use of resources outside of the lecture material, or work with a particular computer programme or simulation.

Online Tests (Quizzes)
Two or three timed online quizzes will be released during the modules. Each student has a unique set of questions. The format of the questions can require a mathematical, numerical, multiple choice or keyword response.

Why study Plasma Physics at Queen’s University?

	- Courses targeted at people who are (or plan to be) professionally involved in plasma research, in the academic or private market;
- Provide an opportunity to work in plasma industry, in microelectronics, in material processing, fusion engineering and elsewhere;
- The web-based courses are specifically designed for remote study and can either be taken as stand-alone web-based courses or be combined into a Master’s degree.
- Excellent job success rate: 74 % of MSc graduates to date have obtained PhD studentships both in UK and abroad, while 13 % are now employed in the private sector.
- Study in one of the biggest Centres active in plasma physics in UK!

The MSc course requires a presence at Queen’s University only for a short period and possibly for the summer research project. It is therefore ideally designed to suit professionally active individuals who are interested in advanced training in a challenging field of Physics.

A fully remote attendance option may also be available, for both UK and overseas students, and can be negociated on a case by case basis.

Single Module option: For research students or employees who need to quickly acquire a basic knowledge of plasma physics, there is a 4-week module “Introduction to Plasma Physics”. Other specialised modules are taught over 8 or 12 weeks. Each course may be taken independently, for “foundation” level training or for know-how upgrade purposes.

Entry requirements
The programme is suitable for graduates with an upper Second Class Honours degree (BSc 2.2) or higher, in Physics or in a related discipline. Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate competency in English language (at least 6.0 in IELTS or iBT TOEFL score of 80).
