Entry: September

This programme is aimed at high calibre and ambitious Mechanical Engineering graduates who wish to gain expertise in systematically developing complex, multidisciplinary engineering design. You will learn how to design products requiring embedded intelligence and comprehensive engineering analysis and how to use six CAE software packages.

Aims
The programme is aimed at high calibre and ambitious Mechanical Engineering graduates who wish to gain expertise in systematically developing complex, multidisciplinary engineering design.

You will learn:

- How to design products requiring embedded intelligence and comprehensive engineering analysis
- How to use six CAE software packages
- Why a programme in Engineering Design?
- Engineering Design is the application of engineering principles, the experience of making, and use of mathematical models and analysis. The design and production of complex engineering products often require the use of embedded intelligence and detailed engineering analysis involving mechanical, electronic and control functions. Advanced theoretical knowledge and a wide range of computer driven tools, methods and methodologies are essential for this process.

Thus there is a need for an integrated course where advanced theory, human factors and creativity tools essential to successful product development are taught, training in software, research and/or applications provided and experience in the application of these knowledge and skill components in an integrating real life group project is given. This course has been developed to fulfil this need.

Course Content
Continued design of modern complex products demands advanced knowledge in mechanical, electronic, manufacturing and control engineering disciplines and human factors in design, ability to use advanced engineering software packages, integrating application experience and ability to carry on learning.

The Engineering Design MSc and its course curriculum has been developed to produce design engineers who can meet these demands. It contains six taught modules where advanced multi-disciplinary theory is taught. As part of the course, six engineering software packages are also taught. In order to give an integrating application experience in an industrial setup, ‘Design Experience’, a group project module with an industry, has been included as part of the curriculum. The dissertation is aimed at providing training in carrying out an in-depth engineering task on a self-learning basis. Thus, at the end of the course you will become a confident design engineer equipped with high quality and advanced knowledge and skills to work on design tasks in an advanced computer assisted environment and ability to gather useful knowledge on an engineering topic on your own when it is necessary as part of the task.

Entry Requirements for 2012 Entry
A UK first or second class Honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification usually in science or engineering or technology. Other qualifications and relevant experience will be assessed on an individual basis.

- To provide a thorough knowledge of the potential and limitations of new manufacturing technologies.
- To illustrate the essential role of the human resource and its effective integration into the manufacturing system.
- To give the sound theoretical underpinning necessary to exploit the potential of modern manufacturing systems.
- To fit management and strategic theories into the realities of modern manufacturing by demonstrating a positive applications approach.
- To encourage work on real industrial problems, giving confidence in the ideas underlying manufacturing and the practicalities of implementing these ideas.

Modes of Study

1 Year Full-Time The taught element of the course (September to April) includes eight modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, tutorials and group/seminar work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

3-5 Years Distance Learning The distance learning programme is designed to enable you to conduct most of your studies at home, in your own time and at your own pace.

There is no requirement to attend lectures at Brunel University, instead you follow a structured programme of self-study at home or at work. Students are supplied with a study pack in the form of text books and CD-ROMs which are supported by e-learning web based lecture materials.

Students can take between 3 and 5 years to complete the course, it is entirely up to you how long you take but usually the minimum is 3 years, with students taking four modules in the first year, four modules in the second year and the dissertation in the third year. However, depending on your other commitments you can take longer up to a maximum of 5 years.

University of Aberdeen

Programme aims
The programme will equip students with the skills and knowledge to take advantage of one of the fastest growing opportunities for employment. Medical Biotechnology requires scientists, business development professionals and people with excellent communication skills. Individuals with the imagination to exploit biotechnological thinking and the flair required to take scientific ideas through to new products or technologies will benefit greatly from, and enjoy, this programme. The course provides a unique opportunity to gain experience of the latest science and business developments in Medical Biotechnology, from tutors who are themselves actively engaged in this area and to experience a 9 month research project.

Programme content
The taught courses will comprise lectures, tutorials, practical classes and small group teaching and directed self learning. The syllabus reflects recent developments in biotechnology that underpin medicine, including medical genetics, molecular immunology, the molecular basis of microbial pathogenesis and pharmacology. It is based on three science modules that develop both knowledge (laboratory methods in applied molecular biology, IT), and interpretation/communication skills. A fourth Bio-business module provides an introduction to market analysis, business governance, intellectual property, ethical issues in biotechnology, the generation of business plans and the making of commercially orientated presentations.

The 9 month research project will either involve laboratory-based research in a biotechnological area or will entail the development of a complete business plan for a product or technology.

Duration
16-24 months full-time

Special features
Flexibility has been introduced to the programme to allow students to study 120 taught credits in Academic Year 1 (September – April) with the option to return in Academic Year 2 (September) or continue in Academic Year 1 from April to undertake the research project, subject to the approval of the Programme Coordinator.

One hundred-and-fifty years after the publication of Darwin’s “The Origin of Species”, evolutionary theory occupies an ever more central role in modern societies, constantly contributing to advances in medicine, environmental sciences, psychology, etc. An increased public awareness of evolutionary biology feeds debates on the impact that evolutionary theory has on our lives – our understanding of the natural world, the origin of life and the ways that humans are subject to natural selection. Evolution underpins all areas of biology.

This course is tailored for bright and motivated science graduates wishing to advance their career in evolutionary biology, either by bridging the gap between undergraduate and doctoral level education, or providing the breadth and depth of knowledge to build up a career in science communication. It provides the chance to meet and interact with like-minded budding evolutionary biologists in a vibrant multicultural environment.

Taught by the strongest and broadest team of evolutionary biologists in Ireland students will have full involvement in active research groups. Students will collect and analyse their own data and write up a paper to be submitted to an international peer-reviewed journal thus significantly enhancing their resume. Students will also have the opportunity to develop their presentation skills for both specialist and lay audiences.

Students will develop an advanced knowledge of the processes, mechanisms and theory of evolution and the ability to apply this knowledge to formulate and test hypotheses using appropriate tools and skills. Graduates will have the ability to interpret morphological, molecular and/or simulated data using logical approaches based on evolutionary theory and the maturity to forecast the wider implications and consequences of their interpretations and conclusions. Science communication is a cornerstone of this course and students will develop the ability to communicate to specialist and non-specialist audiences, in a clear unambiguous way, the results of their research and rationale underpinning them, both through written media and presenting orally.

The course begins in September with a residential field course which introduces in a practical way the main concepts of evolutionary biology. This provides a unique opportunity for the group to get to know each other and the key staff involved. Visiting experts present a topic once a month present which for the next 3 weeks in-house academics explore further with the group through discussion and debate. Students undertake a 15 week research project with field and or laboratory work and write it up as a thesis for submission in August.

Modules available include: Molecular Phylogenetics, The Evolution of Birds, Evolution of Humans, Marine Population Biology, Plant-Atmosphere and Climate Interactions, Ecological Modelling, Developmental Plant Genetics, Epigenetics, Insect-Plant Interactions, Cellular Architecture.

Career opportunities
Graduates are ideally placed to take up roles in museum and public education/understanding of science, wildlife management and environmental conservation, scientific journalism/publishing, further education and research and positions with government department and non-governmental agencies in relation to policy making.

Entry requirements
A recognised honours degree (or equivalent) in a related subject, such as Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Geology, Cellular/Molecular biology, Biochemistry, Environmental biology, Marine biology.

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate competency in English language (at least 6.5 in IELTS or a TOEFL score of 100 on the Internet Based Test).

Interdisciplinary Approaches to Life Science Liliane Bettencourt program, MSc

http://www.aiv-paris.org

The “Approches Interdisciplinaires du Vivant” (‘AIV’) master program of Paris Diderot and Paris Descartes universities unites talented students of disciplines spanning from Medicine, Biology, and Chemistry to Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Economics, Philosophy, Computer and cognitive Sciences. AIV is based on a highly interactive content where every student achieves maturity as a researcher through cycles of sharing knowledge amongst the master community (students and teachers), identification of open unresolved scientific questions and, importantly, designing experimental and theoretical approaches to resolve them.

The 1st year (M1) is consecrated to in-depth course targeting basic quantitative approaches and a long internship, including the participation in the “foundational research prize’ gold-meal winner Paris team to the MIT iGEM competition.

The 2nd year (M2) is devoted to developing meta-skills of researchers including critical analysis, and creative project generation. In parallel, the students follow three research internship projects, with the obligation of taking one theoretical and one experimental subjects. The three internships help the students to find the best fit with a laboratory of their choice and make the necessary background to prepare their own interdisciplinary thesis project. The AIV master is validated by both the Biology and Physics departments of the partner universities.

Students may apply to either the M1 or M2 year, depending on their previous experience.

The 1st year Master (AIV M1) starts with the refresher weeks, which aim at reducing the gap between the various backgrounds of the students, and thus raising their knowledge to a common level needed to follow the courses. The AIV M1 courses give the students a solid background in quantitative biology through fundamental approaches such as mathematics, physics and computer science, as well as emerging fields such as systems and synthetic biology. The students also become familiar with statistical and modeling analysis tools, and with highly sophisticated technologies (nano-fabrication, fluorescence microscopy, micro-fluidics, molecular forces measurements, etc.) allowing the characterization of the molecular mechanisms underlying biological phenomena. The AIV M1 training is concluded by a long internship (5 months). Students wishing to acquire or strengthen a specific knowledge can participate in external modules organized in the Paris region in exchange with one of the AIV courses.

The 2nd year Master (M2) consists in two alternative tracks:

- the AIV M2 track
- or the “Systems and Synthetic Biology, Information and Interactions” (S2I2) M2 track.

In the AIV M2 program, weekly meetings are held on Friday afternoons, axed around three trimester courses dealing with the analysis of scientific writings (articles, reviews and books). In parallel, students participate in three trimester internships (the laboratories can be chosen from any university or institution in the Paris area yet at least one experimental and one theoretical interdisciplinary project are required).

In the S2I2 M2 program, which is shared with the new Paris Descartes-ParisTech Biomedical Engineering Master (BEM) program, students participate in three 14-weeks internship rotations (at least one experimental and one theoretical), including one that should be carried out within the private research sector. In parallel, they choose between “Systems and Synthetic Biology” and “Web Science Interface” orientations, and follow 3 courses (to be validated by the Master’s teachers).

Requirements
Each promotion is composed of up to twenty students with a high level background in one of the following domains: Biology, Physics, Computer Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics, Medicine, Cognitive Sciences, Philosophy or History of science.

Eligibility Master 1: Students with B.Sc. degree or equivalent.
Eligibility Master 2: Students graduated 1st year of a master degree or equivalent.

Foreign students are advised to contact us to check for their eligibility.
In addition, a limited number of post-docs and PhD students with non-biology background who wish to learn more about research in Life Sciences are accepted every year.

Selection:
The selection is based on proven interest in interdisciplinary, previous record and an interview.
