Job description
EMBL-EBI is a world-leader in archiving and disseminating 3D biomacromolecular and cellular structure data and plays a key role in the dissemination of 3D electron microscopy (EM) data through the EMDB (emdb-empiar.org) and EMPIAR (empiar.org) public archives. We develop and provide advanced tools and web-resources for searching, analysing and visualising structural data for the benefit of structural biologists and the wider scientific community. The team consists of an international and inter-disciplinary mix of professionals (scientists and IT specialists). We are looking to expand the team with a data scientist to work on an exciting Wellcome Trust-funded project to enrich the EMDB and make it an invaluable biomedical resource.

Your role
The post holder will:

– Enrich EMDB with value-added biological annotation – adding systematic names describing complexes (e.g., from the Complex Portal), as well as data on function, disease state, cell type, sub-cellular location etc. from various ontologies would aid discoverability of EMDB data and facilitate further integration with other bioinformatics resources
– Develop and lead initiatives to expand the volume and quality of segmentation data in EMDB and EMPIAR, e.g. using crowd-sourced initiatives and ‘segmentathons’
– Help maintain and develop the validation infrastructure for EMDB

You have
Applicants should have a Masters/PhD degree in a biology-related field and at least one year’s experience in software development.

You might also have
Familiarity with bioimaging and/or structural biology techniques (e.g., 3DEM, X-ray crystallography, and NMR) would be desirable as would previous experience with coding in Python.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, fluency in English, ability to work in a team, and attention to detail are required. The position may require occasional travel, mainly in the UK.

Why join us
At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 22 member states and two associate member states. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 650 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme and health insurance, educational and other family related benefits where applicable, as well as financial support for relocation and installation. For more information about pay and benefits click here

We have an informal culture, international working environment and excellent professional development opportunities but one of the really amazing things about us is the concentration of technical and scientific expertise – something you probably won’t find anywhere else.

If you’ve ever visited the campus you’ll have experienced first-hand our friendly, collegial and supportive atmosphere, set in the beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside. Our staff also enjoy excellent sports facilities including a gym, a free shuttle bus, an on-site nursery, cafés and restaurant and a library.
